A survivor sacrificed at the age of 23 due to great psychic suffering

A 23-year-old woman was euthanized on May 7 in Belgium. On March 22, 2016, she was at Brussels National Airport and was about to fly on a school trip when terrorists detonated her explosives. Shanti De Corte was not physically injured, but since then she has suffered psychological consequences, reports RTBF.

So, at the age of 17, she had first been seen by a psychologist, then in psychiatry. The teenager had finally been hospitalized a few weeks after the fact. A process that Shanti De Corte knew about, as she had already spent several stays in this psychiatric facility in Antwerp.

There, he confided in his Facebook profile, explaining in particular: “I receive several medications at breakfast. And up to 11 antidepressants a day. I couldn’t live without it”. Or also: “With all the medication I take, I feel like a ghost who doesn’t feel anything anymore. Maybe there were other solutions besides drugs. »

She finally returned home, the young woman had made a new suicide attempt in 2020. Then she took more and more drugs. The situation had quickly worried those around him. Five of her friends, also present during the attack, had followed a therapeutic week organized in Ostend by another victim of the attacks. The group had quickly discussed with the organizer the situation of his girlfriend.

“Now I will go in peace”

Therefore, one of Ostend’s therapists had offered care to the young woman, writing to her psychiatrist. But the latter reportedly replied that the young woman “was not interested in [la] proposal”. Finally, with too much pain, the student had made several requests for euthanasia due to unalterable psychiatric suffering. One of them was finally accepted. Just before his death, Shanti De Corte left a last message on his Facebook wall : “I laughed and cried. Until the last day. I loved and was allowed to feel what true love was. Now I will go in peace. I know I already miss you. »

“There was nothing to lose by accepting the care offered by the Ostend therapeutic team,” said a neurologist. According to several sources, the Antwerp prosecutor’s office would have opened a judicial investigation, which he did not confirm.
