The prices of many consumer items rise with inflation, and electricity is no exception. While electricity prices have increased by 2-3 times on some providers, Xboxygen wanted to know how much it costs to play games on Xbox and what was the impact of changing the Xbox Series X|S startup settings. These are the results of our analysis.
How much does an Xbox console consume?
You may not know it, but Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S offer two different boot modes.
- The mode Energy saving is the most classic. The console turns off completely and turns back on every time you want to use it.
- The mode Supportformerly called instant startallows you to keep the console in sleep mode so that it installs games or downloads updates in the background, which can usually take a while when sleep mode is not activated.
The console doesn’t consume the same amount of electricity depending on whether it’s on standby, playing a game, watching a Blu Ray, or streaming a movie. Below you will find the official consumption of Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S according to the different configurations and that we use for our calculations.
|Type of consumption||Xbox Series X (watts)||Xbox Series S (watts)|
|Consumption in Instant On mode||13||10|
|Consumption in standby mode||0.5||0.4|
|cons in the game||153||74|
For information, a PS5 consumes around 199 w in game mode (Sony data), or 30% more than an Xbox Series X.
Inevitably, keeping your Xbox on standby consumes more electricity than when it’s in “power save” mode and shuts down completely when not in use. We have calculated the additional cost that this entails over a year in the following tables and according to different consumption habits.
Note that our calculations are based on a moyen du kilowattheure in France of €0.174, which is the prix du kWh du base tarif réglementé d’EDF bloqué toute l’année 2022 grâce au bouclier tariffaire énergétique mis en place par l’État in France. If your energy provider is not EDF, this cost may well be higher. You can calculate your own cost with a rule of thumb.
Xbox Series X Consumption
|use cases||Instant start mode||Power saving mode||Annual savings in eco mode|
|Console off H24||€19.82||€0.76||€19.05|
|2 hours of play each day||€37.60||€20.13||€17.47|
|1 hour of gameplay + 1 hour of streaming every day||€30.87||€13.40||€17.47|
|5 hours of gameplay + 3 hours of streaming every week||€27.02||€8.92||€18.10|
|10 hours of gameplay + 10 hours of streaming every week||€36.21||€18.79||€17.42|
You notice that not using your console while it’s on standby is still consuming a lot of power for nothing, and that’s a $20 bill a year, doing nothing.
If you play 2 hours a day excluding weekends and watch 10 hours a week of streaming content with your Xbox, the cost of electricity for your Xbox Series X increases to around €36 per year. Switching your console to power saving mode saves you around $17 per year. Of course, the economy will be stronger next year when electricity prices increase by around 15% in EDF.
Xbox Series S Consumption
|use cases||Instant start mode||Power saving mode||Annual savings|
|Console off H24||€15.24||€0.61||€14.63|
|2 hours of play each day||€23.37||€9.96||€13.41|
|1 hour of gameplay + 1 hour of streaming every day||€20.45||€7.04||€13.41|
|5 hours of gameplay + 3 hours of streaming every week||€18.58||€4.69||€13.90|
|10 hours of gameplay + 10 hours of streaming every week||23.16||9.78||€13.38|
Since the Xbox Series S consumes less electricity than the Xbox Series X (both in game mode and sleep mode), the cost of running the console is naturally lower, even more so when set to Power Economy mode. Energy.
