Covid-19 in Brittany: hospitalizations now on the rise – Bretagne

For more than a month, Brittany has been facing its eighth wave of covid. During the second half of September, the region’s incidence rate and positivity rate increased by more than 70%.

As it continues to progress, the eighth wave is now hitting Breton hospitals, hitherto untouched. “In recent days, the number of hospitalizations for reasons of covid-19 has increased very significantly,” lamented the Brittany Regional Health Agency (ARS) on Tuesday in its latest update on the health situation.

  • > More than 30,000 new cases

  • The ARS has identified 31,487 new positive cases in Brittany since September 27, an increase of 25% compared to the previous fortnight.

This is significantly less than the 70% increase in pollution seen between mid-September and the end of September. The increase in cases continues, but it is marking time.

  • > An incidence rate close to 500

  • On September 27, Brittany had the highest incidence rate in France (365.8), then it rose 72% in two weeks. Two weeks later, the indicator is close to 500. It is 478.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Tuesday, 31% more.

The region has been largely overtaken, in particular by Grand Est, where the incidence rate exceeds 800. Brittany is now the ninth most affected region in France. Its incidence rate is even lower than the national average of 566.47 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

  • > More than 30% of positive tests

  • The test positivity rate also continues to rise. 31.5% of the tests carried out in Brittany during the last fortnight have been positive.

The Breton positivity rate, which had been the highest in France for weeks, is now fifth. Its increase indicates that the virus is circulating more, regardless of the number of tests performed.

  • > Hospitalizations rise again

  • Hospital indicators had remained stable since the beginning of the eighth wave, but this is no longer the case. 206 patients were hospitalized for covid reasons on September 27, currently 310, an increase of 50%.

On the resuscitation side, there are now 11 covid patients occupying intensive care beds (one more than two weeks ago). 22 have died in the last fortnight in the region.

  • > On the Côtes d’Armor

  • 5,317 contaminations were recorded in fifteen days in Côtes-d’Armor. The incidence rate is now 473.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 351.9 two weeks ago (+35%). The positivity rate is 30.7%.

  • > In Finistere

  • The ARS has identified 7,765 new cases in Finisterre in the last two weeks. The department’s incidence rate is now 436.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (+36%), the lowest in the region. Like the positivity rate, 29.5%.

  • > In Morbihan

  • It is in Morbihan that the incidence rate is experiencing its greatest increase. It went from 346 to 477 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in two weeks. In the same period, 7,207 cases were registered in the department. The positivity rate of the test is 33.3% in the department.

  • > In Ille-et-Vilaine

  • It is in Ille-et-Vilaine where the incidence rate is highest (518.8), but it is also there that it increases the least in two weeks (+22%). 11,198 new cases have been registered in the department, where the positivity rate of the test is 32.2%.
