During the day, the following message was published on his Twitter account: “I hope they respect me: I’m gay”. Later, his former teammate from the Spanish team, Carles Puyol, responded with an ironic message, suggesting that it was not a real announcement: “It’s time to tell about our relationship, Iker”Puyol wrote, accompanying his message with emoticons.

“I have made a mistake”

“I was wrong. Sorry for this unintentionally and absolutely irrelevant joke. I understand that I may have hurt some sensitivities. All my respect and support for the LGBTIQA+ community”Puyol apologized in turn on Twitter.

I’m wrong. Sorry for a clumsy joke with no bad intentions and totally out of place. I understand that it may have hurt sensitivities. All my respect and support for the LGTBIQA+ community

Iker Casillas, former star goalkeeper for Real Madrid and the Spanish national team, has been a key figure in Spanish sport since the historic Euro-World-Euro triplet achieved by ‘Roja’ between 2008 and 2012. His relationship with journalist Sara highly publicized. Carbonero, whom he had kissed live just after the planetary coronation in South Africa, had delighted the gazettes, before their resounding separation in 2021. The couple had two children. According to various observers, Iker Casillas could have published these messages in response to various media outlets that are making fun of his new romantic relationships.

The messages published in the accounts of Casillas and Puyol reacted to Joshua Cavallo, the only openly homosexual footballer who plays in a first division championship, in Australia (A-League). “Iker Casillas and Carles Puyol joke and have fun with the topic of coming out in football, it’s sad. It’s a difficult passage that anyone in the LGBTQ+ community has to go through. Check out my role models and legends of this sport having fun coming out of the closet. and my community is beyond disrespect”Cavallo wrote.

A year ago, in October 2021, the then 21-year-old midfielder posted a video on social media saying: “I’m a footballer and I’m gay”. It had been viewed seven million times in 24 hours. In Spain, the third country in the world to have authorized same-sex marriage in 2005, opening up to LGBT+ (lesbians, gays, bi and trans) remains a taboo in men’s professional football. No active LaLiga player has taken the step to date.
