Iliad (Free) announces a new plan to reduce its energy consumption, even for its subscribers

Although the news poses a risk of energy shortages this winter, Iliad announces new measures to reduce its consumption and that of its subscribers.

The Iliad Group had already committed to contributing to carbon neutrality by 2035. Now it goes further and announces in a press release that it is implementing new actions.

Further improve the energy efficiency of your networks

Because they represent the majority of its total electricity consumption, the Iliad Group indicates that “does everything possible to optimize the consumption of its networks. In mobile, the Group today decided to go further in turning off certain frequency bands at night, extending the current system to frequencies of 2100 Mhz in 4G, 2100 in 3G and 3.5 Ghz in 5G. If traffic requires it, cells that have been turned off are automatically turned back on. This effort translates into a drop in the site’s electricity consumption of more than 10% during the period in which the cells are turned off, without affecting the use and quality of service.

Regarding fixed networks, the migration from copper to fiber is essential for the Xavier Niel Group, a fiber optic line that consumes four times less than the copper network. That is why iliad maintains its active policy of deployment and migration of its subscribers to the Fiber network, which allows it to work in parallel on a strong optimization of its equipment in the copper network. If the disconnection and miniaturization of the DSLAMs implemented by the Group already allows significant energy savings, iliad advocates accelerating the copper disconnection plan in France in all lines suitable for Fiber of the four operators because it is the only real measure that It will mean significant energy savings at the sectoral level.

Finally, the Group undertakes to erase up to 7.05MW of the instantaneous consumption of its datacenters this winter in the event of energy tension throughout the country, and this for periods of 1 to 24 consecutive hours each time it is necessary to participate in the balance of the French electricity network.

Optimize energy consumption related to all buildings/offices and stores

With nearly 10,000 employees in France, which makes it the second largest employer in the sector, and more than 180 stores throughout the country, the Group announces that it is already committed to a series of measures to optimize consumption in all its offices and commercial space. A drop of two degrees in temperature has been put in place and measures have been put in place to optimize lighting and computer equipment. The Group is also committed to significantly reducing the switch-on time of outdoor lighting, advertising screens and store windows to restrict their switching on outside of opening hours.

Raising awareness among Freebox employees and subscribers, with tools available to subscribers to reduce their energy consumption

The Group will also support its employees and subscribers in reducing their energy consumption by promoting simple eco-gestures and offering tools for action. For its employees, the Group will offer training on climate issues and sobriety starting in October. For its subscribers, the Group facilitates access to energy saving tools, in particular, the planning of WI-FI extinction through the Freebox Connect application and the highlighting of an energy saving menu in some Freeboxes.

EcoWatt Charter Membership

At the same time, the iliad Group adheres to the EcoWatt charter supported by RTE and ADEME. This civic initiative allows the French, businesses and local authorities to adopt responsible energy consumption and thus contribute to guaranteeing a good supply of electricity for all. The Group thus undertakes to make its employees and subscribers aware of the EcoWatt alert system and to implement additional measures to reduce consumption during peak energy consumption this winter.
