The reunion of Marty McFly and Doc, heroes of “Back to the Future”, at the New York Comic Con

Gathered for a special conference at New York Comic Con, Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox recalled some memories from the filming of Robert Zemeckis’ trilogy.

During this nostalgic sequence for fans of the saga, the two actors recalled some memories of their emblematic roles, in particular when Michael J. Fox was called to replace Eric Stolz, who was originally going to play Marty McFly, after the shooting of the first part had already started several months ago.

“The announcement, made at one in the morning, after six weeks of filming, was that the actor who played Marty would no longer play Marty, and that tomorrow we would start filming with Michael. I felt like I had barely survived the first six weeks and have to start all over again,” Christopher Lloyd said during the conference.

Michael J. Fox, who was filming the series at the time. Family ties, he was worried about accepting the role as his mother feared that he would be too exhausted juggling the television series and shooting a feature film. Finally, the actor decided to participate in this project that was going to disrupt his and Christopher Lloyd’s career.

“Parkinson’s disease is a gift”

During these reunions, Michael J. Fox also recovered his health. Suffering from Parkinson’s disease, the actor, now retired, wanted to thank his fans for the support received since the announcement of his diagnosis, made public in 1998.

“You’ve given me my whole life. The best thing that’s ever happened to me is this. Parkinson’s is a gift. When I tell people that, they say, ‘You’re crazy.’ […] But it’s a gift and I wouldn’t trade it for the world…” he confided.

This meeting took place while a musical based on the film was being performed. Return to the future is currently showing in London. Adapted by Bob Gale, who co-wrote the original screenplay with Robert Zemeckis, this project will also appear on Broadway in 2023. Olly Dobson and Roger Bart play Marty McFly and Doc, respectively.
