very dangerous fashion causes concern

For several years, getting a tattoo on the white of the eye has been possible, much to the dismay of health professionals. This practice, which continues to develop, is often associated with very serious complications.

It is a fad that health professionals would have done without. For several years, scleral tattoos have been practiced more and more despite the risks involved and the disapproval of health authorities and the medical field. This trend consists of injecting ink into the “whites of the eyes” to dye them permanently. The dye is injected between the two layers of the eye, an irreversible operation.

Only here: beyond the “spectacular” effect, this practice is usually linked to very serious complications. Patients are exposed to all kinds of consequences, including traumatic, inflammatory, immunological and infectious. The newspaper Le Monde reported certain cases that, without a doubt, should give pause to those who want to take the plunge.

A 30-year-old man recently made a name for himself after being sent to the eye emergency room at Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital. He complained of eye pressure and a foreign body sensation in both eyes. The ophthalmologists noticed that he had several 5-mm nodules under the conjunctiva of both eyes (membrane that covers the inside of the eyelid), whose arrangement corresponded to the four ink injection points. Despite local anti-inflammatory treatment, “no favorable or unfavorable development other than a reduction in symptoms” has not been observed since.

a dramatic case

Another case, even more dramatic, was also reported by the newspaper. She is a 24-year-old girl who suffered severe pain and decreased visual acuity after being tempted by this practice. Faced with these painful symptoms, she received numerous treatments, to no avail. Two months later, the young woman had to have her eye gouged out.

Faced with these increasingly numerous clinical cases, ophthalmologists strongly advise against giving in to this temptation. For them, this modality, described as “very dangerous”, can not only have dramatic consequences on vision but also cause long-term complications. At the moment, health professionals do not have enough perspective on this practice. So you better think twice…
